“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is one half of the very original version of the very original band known as Half Japanese. Non conformists, iconoclasts, they socked it to the man often without ever plugging in. Brother of Jad Fair, he’s been in and out of Half Japanese over the years (siblings eh?) but he’s never stopped making music or art. It’s the unorthodox free spirit that is the brilliant – David Fair!

See below for enlightenment on the Half Japanese guitar tekkers…

I’ve written a bunch on Half Japanese it seems…

Jad Fair: The Half Japanese interview

So it was about time I evened up the score with David…I’ve also been playing catch up with publishing, so I’m glad to get this out into the ether. Without further ado, it’s over to the Fair, David for his “song for ewe”…

“Here you go, Nick. I hope this isn’t too long. It’s hard to talk about anything in just a sentence or two.

It’s a song that I always play on youtube when I get an infusion of Remicade every 8 weeks to treat Ulcerative Colitis. I am hooked up to a medicine drip for about 3 hours and I go to Youtube to pass the time. I almost always start with Bo Carter.

Bo Carter is the king of naughty blues songs. His lyrics are unbeatable, and they’re delivered with a pleasant voice and tasty guitar.

Of course, there are thousands of songs featuring pleasant voices and tasty guitar work…why am I drawn to this one? I don’t know. Maybe it is a perfect balance, exactly centred between being simple and complex. The lyrics are suggestive but not raunchy. His voice is nice but not beautiful. The guitar playing is skilful but not flashy. Maybe this song is so centred and balanced that it is perfect. Stupidly brilliant or brilliantly stupid….It’s perfect.”

THANKYOU DAVID. HOPE YOU’RE OK, SORRY IT’S TAKEN SO LONG. ALL THE BEST, NH AT VS.
