“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is one third of the band Gulp, which also features guitarist Gid Goundrey and Guto Pryce of Super Furry Animals and their second long player “All Good Wishes” (on E.L.K. Records) is today’s 6 Music Album of the Day. Lead song “Claudia” is dreamy like Lush and whip smart like Saint Etienne. When I first heard it I had to play it again instantly and compulsively. Like a shimmering mirage of 60s pop on an insistent bed of subtle psych, I haven’t felt like this about an ostensibly indie pop song since Stereolab’s “French Disko” (showing my age natch). And given my fond memories of Guto and the SFA running amok in the MTV Europe studios for the first and last ever live edition of Alternative Nation, what’s not to love about Gulp. So I’m pleased to welcome to these pages, their beguiling singer Lindsey Leven!

Check out the pleasing artwork with the Biba style band logo and Demis Roussos vibes.

And here’s a taster of the album, the afore-mentioned “Claudia” – once you pop you can’t stop…

But what song has Lindsey enjoyed lately, without further ado, here’s her pleasingly hippy-ish “song for ewe”…

“Vashti Bunyan – I’d Like to Walk Around In Your Mind

I’ve always enjoyed the soothing sounds of Vashti Bunyan, but her almost lullaby like melodies have served me particularly well recently whilst enjoying time with my young baby.

Gently psychedelic, “I’d Like To Walk Around In Your Mind Someday” is a beautiful love song, invoking feelings of inquisitive joy and slight melancholy at the same time. I love how Vashti can put a story across to the listener with her voice, something she does effortlessly. The violin towards the end is simply devine.”

“All Good Wishes” is out now on E.L.K. Records, check out the band’s website for how to get it.
