“SONG FOR EWE”
with PETER MATTHEW BAUER
ex of THE WALKMEN
“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest was in fantastic band The Walkmen, but (after their indefinite hiatus) is now a solo artist and put out an amazing album called “Liberation!” (note the exclamation) on Memphis Industries a coupla years back. It was a riotous world hopping voyage through spirituality and faith, things I’d normally steer well clear of but for this man’s great voice and pop songwriting talent, especially on the truly epic (and I try not to overuse that hyperbole) song “You Are The Chapel”. He’s also in a band called The Devourers with Skyler from the Fleet Foxes on guitar, and recently (unsurprisingly given the subject matter) he’s been giving proceeds from sales of “Liberation!” to help Doctors Without Borders and the International Rescue Committee in their struggles with the refugee crisis in Syria. He’s also a keen astrologer. The cosmos and fate have brought him to Velvet Sheep (after I was lucky enough to review him on The Quietus), here he is – Peter Matthew Bauer!
If you haven’t already got “Liberation!” I strongly urge you to get your hands on it…
If you like, you can read my review of it for The Quietus here.
While we wait for a new album by our man PMB, without further ado, here’s his intriguing and yet unsurprising choice for a “song for ewe”…
“This song by Peter Tosh and the Wailers “Funeral” is the earlier version of the far more popular “Burial” off “Legalize It”.
This version is maybe my favorite recording on planet earth. Everyone on here is incredibly bad-ass sounding and the piano and vocals especially just get me going no matter how many times I hear it. Thanks!”
CHEERS TO PMB!
