“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is someone I’m surprised not to have encountered before until I saw an arresting picture of them flanked by The HITMakers from Jon Spencer’s incendiary (and surprisingly) debut solo album, the esteemed Bob Bert (Pussy Galore, Sonic Youth, Chrome Cranks, Lydia Lunch etc) and Sam Coomes (Quasi). How could I have missed them? The prowling lead-singer of pounding Cramps-like garage band Pussycat & The Dirty Johnsons, they recently supported Jon Spencer on his UK tour (playing at the Exchange, Bristol) and have also supported such esteemed punk outsiders such as Thee Oh Sees and surely kindred spirits Demented Are Go, Bow Wow Wow, The Rezillos and The Polecats who have previously also lent Phil Bloomberg and his double bass on a couple of recordings.

Stalking around the stage like a mixture of Eartha Kitt, Poison Ivy Rorschach and (of course) Catwoman, when she opens her mouth and lets rip, she’s like a psychedelic Karen O meets a radioactive Runaway Joan Jett. With a third album out called “Ain’t No Pussy” where has she been all VS’ life? Welcome to the fanzine, the titular Pussycat of Pussycat and The Dirty Johnsons a.k.a Puss Johnson

Along with the rambunctious backing of the delightfully named Dirty Jake and Filfy Antz, Puss is an irresistible and unstoppable force and she’s chosen an equally uncompromising musical maverick as her “song for ewe”…so without further ado…

“This is a band that I was introduced to by my fella ‘Olly’ Harrison who was in Satan’s Rats/The Photos with Blurt guitarist Steve Eagles.

I instantly liked them – I really dig their hypnotic grooves, Ted’s gnarled outpourings and discordant sax playing. I first heard a fantastic live version of Empty Vessels that they had on their Myspace page from Bucharest in 2009, which is sadly no longer playable!

The album version is still great though. They are superb live.”

I mentioned that Ted is an old friend from back in my days producing MTV Europe’s Alternative Nation and that he was a top bloke and Puss concurred:

“Yeah he’s a character! He kicked me in the shin with his pointy shoes, I think it means he thought I was O.K. ha!”

Pussycat & The Dirty Johnsons are still on tour, including back in Bristol tomorrow…
