“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is an indie legend who has been keeping it ether-real for years. As half of A R Kane, he made dream pop before that was even a thing. He also had a number one record for the 4AD label when A R Kane joined Colourbox to form M/A/R/R/S for crossover dance track “Pump Up The Volume”. Most recently, (after being in the musical wildery-ness since the 90s!) he’s co-released “Winter Tale” a “maxi-single” with Canadian-Ukrainian shoegaze duo Ummagma which you can check out here.

I used to write about A R Kane back in the zine days and have always enjoyed the tune “When You’re Sad” from back in the day (and also on my Rough Trade Indie Pop comp), but I had forgotten about them until enjoying Andy Weatherall’s The Asphodells cover / remix treatment of “A Love From Outer Space” on Masterpiece: Andrew Weatherall (also the name of a long running Weatherall club night). I’m pleased I’ve found space (which truly is the place) to feature this sonic adventurer – welcome to Velvet Sheep Mr. Rudy Tambala!

(here’s a blast from his 90s past…)

and another…

A R Kane “Green Hazed Daze”

and here’s the one that got the Weatherall reinvention…

I was wondering what kind of esoteric trip into otherworld soundworlds Rudy would offer – it’s no surprise, but definitely no disappointment – he’s gone for an alien classic! And enjoy his mixture of gonzoid prose and runaway starlight express of thought/expressway to yr skull. It’s over to Rudy…

“”SPACE IS THE PLACE” – SUN RA – I was given the biography of the same title this Christmas.

Renewed my interest. Being lisninevrydaysince.
I was a fan around the start of Kane in ’86.

Would go to Mole Jazz Kings X ldn and buy up all the Sun Ra vinyl.

This track became the context for much of Kane’s early thinking and approach to music.

It really needs best be best played best on a best vinyl stereo set up, tilting on the floor, spliff, float off and up and out into space, cos space is the place.
