“SONG FOR EWE”
with STEFANIE MANNAERTS of
BRUTUS

“SONG FOR EWE” is the feature where artists & music people beloved by VELVET SHEEP choose an obscure song they’ve been listening to that day. Today’s guest is a powerhouse of a singing drummer from a new band from Leuven, Belgium called BRUTUS. Her drumming style is pummelling and yet precise and nuanced, while her vocal style is like a throatier Patti Smith and the band make a mighty racket, like early “Potato Junkie” Therapy? or Raging Speedhorn meets the sludge of the Melvins and the complexity of Death From Above 1979. The band began by paying homage to Refused but took on a new disarming dimension (one that’s pleasingly hard to categorise) when today’s star turned up. The best drummer / singer since Bricklayer Cake’s Todd Trainer, in the best Belgium band since Evil Superstars – welcome to Velvet Sheep – Stefanie Mannaerts!

Brutus will release debut album “Burst” on 24 Feb (almost an anagram of Brutus but not quite, recorded in Vancouver with Japandroids producer Jesse Gander) and play in the UK in March, but before that it’s over to Stefanie for a choice that couldn’t be any more on point, a proper nailed on Brutus influence:

“I’ve chosen “Judith” from the band Raketkanon.

Best fucking drum-fills in the world. They’re played so tasteful and the way they’re driving the song forward is outstanding.

The energy in this song feels like it’s coming from below; it’s just a different kind of energy. The clean guitar in contrast with the synth bass is otherworldly!”
